But I wrote it myself!
Perhaps you don’t want to be known as an AI writer in your place of business. Perhaps you want a little more credit, maybe a lot more credit than that. I don’t blame you.
Perhaps you never use AI-written content in what you produce, although you might use it for outlines or research. Did you know that what you write, with no input from AI, can come out of the AI detectors as being AI-written with a most likely AI score? Having been there, I know this is a very frustrating situation. If your writing mimics the underlying training of AI, you likely are used to receiving an AI-content rating.
Here is another bite for you. At least one, probably more, AI program now claims to ‘humanize’ your AI-written content for you. You upload your AI-written content to them and then download your newly humanized content.
What is this thing called Humanization?
Do you know how at least one such program accomplishes this ‘humanization?’ By cluttering your composition with errors, i.e., spelling, grammar, syntax, punctuation… Again, I kid you not. In this latter instance of AI progress, AI appears to be mocking us, don’t you agree?
My crystal ball says that AI will pretty soon take credit for everything we do, except for ‘humanized’ content that is full of errors.
The Seven Strategies You Need to Know (FTW)
Here are seven strategies that will likely (and I emphasize LIKELY) convince AI that your composition is human. Sprinkle these throughout your content, and you can decrease the Likely AI-generated score. I have only listed seven here, but at my last count, there are at least 80 such gems. It’s ironic, isn’t it, how we have to trick AI to avoid its erroneous conclusions?

1 – Parenthesis
Example: The executive meeting, which was scheduled for 20 minutes (but lasted two hours to address all issues thoroughly), left everyone relieved the project was completed.
AI’s interpretation: The inserted clause makes the text more dynamic and spontaneous. This makes it less likely to be flagged as robotic or formulaic.
2 – Inversion
Example: Powerful, he may be, but generous he is not.
AI’s interpretation: AI does not typically use inversions. AI currently prefers more standard sentence structures. Today, AI would mark this writing as human generated.
3 – Apposition
Example: Mable Maplethorp, the owner and chief maple taster of Mable’s Bakery on Main, has received a James Beard Foundation Award for the fifth consecutive year.
AI’s Interpretation: Inserting “the owner and chief maple taster of Mable’s Bakery on Main” creates a natural layering of information that sounds more human than AI-generated.
4 – Asyndeton
Example: He came, he spoke, he departed.
AI’s Interpretation: In this example, there is no commonly accepted use of conjunctions, and AI content usually sticks to widely accepted norms (except, as we facetiously noted, when they are ‘humanizing’ the content.) Therefore, today’s AI detectors would likely assume this example is human writing.
(I love the asyndeton, primarily because it slaps the notion that we have to follow grammar guidelines in the face. Unfortunately, the poor gasping, by-the-book nuns in their shock, including my first-grade teacher, Sister Miriam Ann, spontaneously transmorphed into non-synchronized whirling dervishes.)
5 – Polysyndeton
Example: Give me one bourdon and one scotch and one beer.
AI’s Interpretation: For AI, this does not compute, and not because AI is drunk, although it might chastise you for the alcohol content. The real issue is that AI does not partake in having too many conjunctions. Our example would, in all likelihood, be treated as human-generated content – for breaking the typical grammatical guideline (not for the subject matter.)
6 – Hypotaxis
Example: While the child was screeching and throwing a fit, Child Protective Services knocked at the door, causing a bit of panic and chaos in the household.
AI’s Interpretation: Subordinate clauses add complexity and nuance to a sentence. AI much prefers simpler sentence structure. (But AI is learning our nature pretty quickly.)
7 – Parataxis
Example: To close our seven tips for besting Smarty Pants, let’s visit Hemingway’s Hills Like White Elephants for our parataxis example: I was trying to drive. I was not drunk. I was not ill. I was sober.
AI’s Interpretation: Instead of using a single sentence with conjunctions, these are short sentences, giving a more informal, natural tone and making Hemingway’s writing feel very human. We hear each distinct and succinct thought of his.
